About Me

I'm a former journalist and high school English teacher taking a break from the career to focus on maintaining a healthy pregnancy.

A few days before our third wedding anniversary, we found out that we were having a baby.  Until taking that test (ok, 6 tests), I never even realized how thrilling this would be for us.  We were
over the moon.
But with very active Ulcerative Colitis (also diagnosed with Crohn's, but UC is my primary IBD issue), I had many concerns.  From medications to nutritition and weight deficits, I was so worried about how my condition would affect our growing child.  I couldn't find any real experiences online, and and most of the people I knew with IBD had relatively mild cases.

I had no one to connect with and felt really isolated.

That's why I started this blog.  If I felt alone, I figured one or two of you out there did too.  It's scary and exposing to put yourself online like this about something so personal, but I truly believe that we're only as strong as the information we can arm ourselves with.  And the connections we can build with others going through similar circumstances can make all the difference.

  1. I just have to say I am so thankful for finding your blog. I am also due with my first baby in April 2013, and got a very bad flare when first becoming pregnant. They thought that I just had a bacterial infection but after months of high wb cell counts and anemia a blood test confirmed that I have UC. I can't get a colonoscopy to fully confirm but all my symptoms point to UC. Right now I am trying to control it with diet as I do not want to be on meds. It is such a scary thing to go through especially being pregnant! I feel like I am barely showing and I am 6 months! I am just trying to focus on staying stress free and healthy! Thank you for such a wonderful blog!

    1. Kristine, thank you so much for your comment. I'm so glad to be able to connect with you, especially since we seem to be at the same point in our pregnancies and dealing with the same worries. I'm so sorry you can't be officially diagnosed; that has to add so many concerns and issues to the symptoms you're already experiencing. I'm thinking about you and hoping that you're able to find some relief soon.

  2. Thanks for your blog, found it on babycenter. I really need to get back on the SCD diet and I need a support system. I love your recipes. Anyway I am trying to get over a flare up with Prednisone, Lialda, and SCD diet. I am due in April with my first baby. Growth scans show he is ok thank God, even though I have been sick.

  3. Hi Taya! Thank you for your comment. It seems like we are going through a very similar experience, and--I think I've seen you on Babycenter--are even at the same stage of pregnancy. It's wonderful to connect with you. I'm so glad to hear your baby is doing well. April is around the corner!
I get a ton of the recipes from Pinterest: http://pinterest.com/nmc60622/specific-carbohydrate-diet/
It is so hard to stay strict with SCD, especially when it feels like things might be getting a little better. Finding decent recipes is what keeps me going! So glad I can share them with you. Take care--and please keep me posted on how you and baby doing!
